Girtycoelia was named by King (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 227,652,203]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Girtycoeliidae.
It was assigned to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Girtycoeliidae by Finks et al. (2004).
