Eunotosaurus was named by Seeley (1892). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Eunotosauridae.

It was assigned to Mesosauria by Seeley (1892); to Chelonia by Broom (1913); to Eunotosauridae by Nopcsa (1928), Kuhn (1966) and Cox (1969); to Anapsida by Carroll (1988); and to Parareptilia by Modesto (2000).
