Taxonomy
Benthosphenus was named by Shishkin and Lozovsky (1979). It is not extant. Its type is Benthosphenus lozovskii.

It was assigned to Benthosuchinae by Getmanov (1989); to Thoosuchinae by Novikov (1994); and to Trematosauridae by Ivakhnenko et al. (1997).
