Taxonomy
Chelus was named by Duméril (1806). It is extant. It is the type genus of Chelidae.
It was assigned to Chelinae by van Dijk et al. (2014); to Chelidae by Maniel and de la Fuente (2016); and to Chelidae by Carroll (1988), de Broin and de la Fuente (1993), Frank and Ramus (1996), Gaffney et al. (2006), Oliveira and Romano (2007), Riff et al. (2010), Sanchez-Villagra and Scheyer (2010), de la Fuente et al. (2014) and Silva Lacerda et al. (2020).
