Taxonomy
Staurotypus was named by Wagler (1830). It is extant. Its type is Staurotypus moschus. It is the type genus of Staurotypinae.

It was assigned to Kinosternidae by Frank and Ramus (1996); to Kinosternidae by Carroll (1988) and Cadena et al. (2012); to Staurotypinae by Hutchison (1991) and van Dijk et al. (2014); and to Kinosternidae by Joyce and Bourque (2016).
