Taxonomy
Carettochelys was named by Ramsay (1886). It is extant. It is the type genus of Carettochelyidae, Carettochelyinae.

It was assigned to Carettochelyinae by Karl et al. (2012); and to Carettochelyidae by Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996), van Dijk et al. (2014) and White et al. (2023).
