Taxonomy
Chitra was named by Gray (1844). It is extant. It is the type genus of Chitrainae.

It was assigned to Trionychidae by Carroll (1988) and Frank and Ramus (1996); to Trionychinae by Lydekker (1889) and van Dijk et al. (2014); and to Chitrainae by Jasinski et al. (2022).
