Taxonomy
Canis megamastoides was named by Pomel (1842). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Perrier-Etouaires, which is in the MN 16 of horizon France.

It was synonymized subjectively with Canis mitzopouli by Sickenberg (1968); it was recombined as Nyctereutes megamastoides by Viret et al. (1954), Kurten (1968), Monguillon et al. (2004), Wang et al. (2008) and Koufos (2022).

  • Canis mitzopouli was named by Paraskevaidis (1953). It is not extant. Its type locality is Psychiko, Athens, which is in a Pliocene/Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Greece.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Nyctereutes megamastoides by Sickenberg (1968) and Koufos (2022).
  • Canis borbonicus was named by Gervais (1859). It is not extant.

    It was synonymized objectively with Nyctereutes megamastoides by Koufos (2022).
