Clemmys was named by Ritgen (1828). It is extant. Its type is Testudo guttata.
It was assigned to Emydidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988), Shoshani et al. (1989), Parris and Daeschler (1995) and Frank and Ramus (1996); and to Emydinae by Melentis (1966), Bickham (1975), Ernst and Barbour (1989), Holman and Fritz (2001), Holman (2002), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Bourque (2016).
