Emys was named by Dumeril (1806). It is extant. It is the type genus of Emydidae, Emydinae.
It was assigned to Chelonia by Leidy (1865); to Chelonia by Leidy (1860) and Seeley (1881); to Paludinosa by Quenstedt (1882); to Testudinidae by Lydekker (1889); to Emydinae by Bickham (1975), Holman (2002) and van Dijk et al.
