Psarolepis romeri was named by Yu (1998) [Dermal bone surface with large, closely-spaced pores; fronto-ethmoidal shield longer than parietal shield; prominent snout with subterminal gape; pineal opening present; fenestra exonaria anterior dorsally positioned; fenestra exonaria posterior ventrally enclosed by dorso-lateral flange of premaxilla; median rostral toothed and taking part in jaw margin; pars palatina of premaxillae meeting each other in midline as thin strip behind tooth pad of median rostral; upper jaw margin Mshaped in anterior and ventral views; parasphenoid small and lozenge-shaped; internal carotid artery canal not piercing parasphenoid; internasal cavity large and deep, with posterior extensions flanking dorso-lateral margin of parasphenoid; nasal capsule with no ventral or ventrolateral opening leading to mouth cavity; sphenoid region very short; suborbital ledge very wide, with lateral margin bearing articular area for palatoquadrate; basipterygoid process not well-developed; suprapterygoid process absent; postorbital pillar flanking lateral cranial wall; notochordal pit ventrally surrounded by curved groove possibly for attachment of connective tissue sheath; lower jaw with five coronoids; external surface of lower jaw with three large fossae]. Its type specimen is IVPP V6795, a partial skull (Anterior cranial portion), and it is a 3D body fossil.
