Macrobaena was named by Tatarinov (1959). Its type is Macrobaena mongolica. It is the type genus of Macrobaenidae.
It was assigned to Baenidae by Tatarinov (1959); to Chelonia by Carroll (1988); and to Macrobaenidae by Kuhn (1966), Parham and Hutchison (2003) and Brinkman et al. (2010).
