Petrolacosauridae was named by Peabody (1952). It is not extant. Its type is Petrolacosaurus.
It was assigned to Ophiacodontia by Kuhn (1966); to Eosuchia by Peabody (1952) and Reisz (1977); to Prolacertiformes by Chatterjee (1980); to Diapsida by Benton (1985); to Araeoscelida by Carroll (1988); and to Araeoscelidia by Laurin (1991).
