Taxonomy
Mesenosaurus was named by Efremov (1938). It is not extant. Its type is Mesenosaurus romeri.
It was assigned to Millerosauria by Watson (1957); to Mesenosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Varanopidae by Ivakhnenko (2008); to Mesenosaurinae by Spindler et al. (2018); and to Mycterosaurinae by Modesto et al. (2001), Maddin et al. (2006) and Maho et al. (2019).
