Taxonomy
Scottimus viduus was named by Korth (1981). Its type locality is Warbonnet Creek (Orellan), which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Willeumys viduus by Korth and Tabrum (2017) and Korth et al. (2022).
