Synocladia hypnoides was named by Sharpe (1853).

It was recombined as Phylloporina hypnoides by Dreyfuss (1948); it was recombined as Moorephylloporina hypnoides by Morozova (2001); it was recombined as Chasmatopora hypnoides by Ernst and Key (2007) and Jiménez-Sánchez (2009).
