Thalattosauridae was named by Merriam (1904). Its type is Thalattosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Nicholls (1999).
It was assigned to Thalattosauromorphi by Hay (1930); to Prolacertiformes by Seiffert (1975); to Neodiapsida by Benton (1985); to Thalattosauria by Merriam (1905), Nopcsa (1923), Kuhn (1946), Kuhn (1966) and Nicholls and Brinkman (1993); to Thalattosauroidea by Nicholls (1999); and to Thalattosauria by Zhao et al. (2013).
