Pachystropheus was named by von Huene (1935). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Pachystropheidae.

It was assigned to Pachystropheidae by Kuhn (1966) and Kuhn (1971); to Sphenodontidae by Carroll (1988); and to Choristodera by Storrs and Gower (1993) and Storrs et al. (1996).
