Taxonomy
Platycystites ovalis was named by Frest et al. (1979). Its type specimen is SUI 3953 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rye Cove, Clinchport, which is in an Ashbyan transition zone/lower shoreface packstone/grainstone in the Benbolt Formation of Virginia.
