Paliguanidae was named by Broom (1926). It is not extant. It was considered unknown by Benton (1985).

It was assigned to Iguania by Kuhn (1946); to Prolacertilia by Kuhn (1966); to Lepidosauria by Benton (1985); to Eolacertilia by Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); and to Lepidosauromorpha by Jones et al. (2013).
