Asaphus (Platypeltis) croftii was named by Callaway (1877). It is the type species of Platypeltoides, Asaphus (Platypeltis).
It was recombined as Symphysurus croftii by Stubblefield and Bulman (1927); it was recombined as Platypeltoides croftii by Prantl and Pribyl (1949) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
