Kuehneosaurus was named by Robinson (1962). Its type is Kuehneosaurus latus. It is the type genus of Kuehneosauridae.

It was assigned to Kuehneosauridae by Kuhn (1966), Robinson (1967), Estes (1983), Benton (1985) and Carroll (1988).

Robinson 1967Eleven pairs of mid-dorsal ribs which can be folded back along the body; of these, the length of the more anterior members of the series is about one and a half times the width of the back of the skull, the first eight are verti- cally broad at-their distal ends, and the last three have rod-like shafts; none with ventral curvature- of the shaft.
