Chelichnus hicklingi was named by Nopsca (1923). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is L6334, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Mansfield, which is in a Permian terrestrial horizon in the Mansfield Red Sandstone Formation of the United Kingdom.
