Plastoceridae was named by Crownson (1972). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Plastocerinae by Kusy et al. (2018); it was reranked as the tribe Plastocerini by Douglas et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Cantharoidea by Crowson (1981); to Elateroidea by Lawrence and Newton (1995); to Elateridae by Kusy et al. (2018); and to Dendrometrinae by Douglas et al. (2021).
