Xantusiidae was named by Baird (1858) [also said to be 1859]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).
It was synonymized subjectively with Lacertidae by Cope (1875); it was misspelled as Xanthusiidae by Gadow (1898), Perrier (1928), Kuhn (1946), McGrew et al. (1959), Kuhn (1966), Seiffert (1975), Schatzinger (1980), Estes (1983), Estes et al.
