It was synonymized subjectively with Abronia by Kuhn (1966).

It was assigned to Gerrhonotinae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Anguinae by Estes (1976); to Gerrhonotidae by Cope (1875), Estes (1964) and Estes (1983); and to Anguidae by Estes and Tihen (1964), Yatkola (1976), Carroll (1988) and Frank and Ramus (1996).
