Taxonomy
Machaerosaurus was named by Gilmore (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Machaerosaurus torrejonensis.
It was assigned to Sauria by Gilmore (1928) and Hay (1930); to Anguinae by Estes (1983) and Sullivan (1987); and to Anguidae by Carroll (1988) and Sullivan (1991).
