Taxonomy
Heloderma was named by Wiegmann (1829). It is extant. Its type is Trachyderma horridum. It is the type genus of Helodermatidae. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).

It was assigned to Helodermatidae by Galbreath (1953), Kuhn (1966), Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); to Helodermidae by Cope (1875), Hay (1930) and Frank and Ramus (1996); to Varanoidea by Lee and Caldwell (2000); and to Monstersauria by Yi and Norell (2013).
