Taxonomy
Ostrea howelli was named by Wiedey (1928). Its type specimen is SDSNH 26, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LSJU loc. 446, Sespe Creek, which is in a Miocene coastal horizon in the Vaqueros Formation of California.
It was recombined as Pycnodonte (Pycnodonte) howelli by Moore (1987).
