Sphaeroidina dehiscens was named by Parker and Jones (1865). It is extant. It is the type species of Sphaeroidinella.

It was recombined as Sphaeroidinella dehiscens by Cushman (1927), Kiessling (2009) and Lam and Leckie (2020).
