Halicyon richardi was named by Gray (1866). It is extant.

It was recombined as Phoca richardsi by Gray (1864) and Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Phoca richardii by Allen (1902); it was recombined as Phoca (Phoca) richardsi by Friant (1947); it was recombined as Phoca vitulina richardii by Berta and Churchill (2012).
