Nothosauria was named by Baur (1889). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Simosauria by Osborn (1904); it was reranked as the suborder Nothosauri by Jaekel (1910); it was reranked as the superfamily Nothosauria by Rieppel (2000); it was reranked as the suborder Nothosauria by Roxo (1937), Kuhn (1946), Kuhn (1966), Sander (1989), Rieppel and Mazin (1997) and Liu et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Sauropterygii by Jaekel (1910); to Sauropterygia by Osborn (1903) and Carroll (1988); to Sauropterygia by Roxo (1937), Kuhn (1946), Kuhn (1966) and Sander (1989); to Eosauropterygia by Rieppel and Mazin (1997); to Nothosauroidea by Rieppel (2000); to Reptilia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sauropterygia by Liu et al. (2014).
