Vesicocaulis was named by Ott (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 218,920]. It is not extant. Its type is Vesicocaulis alpinus. It is the type genus of Vesicocauliinae.
It was assigned to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Vesicocauliinae by Finks et al. (2004).
