Taxonomy
Mesosuchus was named by Watson (1912). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Mesosuchidae.
It was assigned to Howesiidae by Watson (1917); to Mesosuchidae by Benton (1985); to Rhynchosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Archosauromorpha by Senter (2004) and Nesbitt (2011); to Rhynchosauria by Dilkes (1998) and Mukherjee and Ray (2015); and to Rhynchosauria by Ezcurra et al. (2016).
