Taxonomy
Arizonasaurus was named by Welles (1947). Its type is Arizonasaurus babbitti. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt et al. (2011) and Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Pseudosuchia by Welles (1947); to Erythrosuchidae by Charig and Sues (1976), Carroll (1988) and Hunt (1993); to Poposauria by Nesbitt (2003); to Suchia by Nesbitt (2005); to Poposauroidea by Weinbaum and Hungerbühler (2007); to Ctenosauriscidae by Butler et al. (2011); to Ctenosauriscidae by Nesbitt et al. (2011); and to Poposauroidea by Nesbitt (2011).
