Proterochampsa was named by Reig (1959). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Protosuchia by Charig (1967); to Proterochampsia by Nesbitt (2011) and Dilkes and Arcucci (2012); and to Proterochampsidae by Cruickshank (1978), Carroll (1988), Parrish (1993), Trotteyn et al. (2013), Ezcurra et al. (2015) and Ezcurra (2016).
