Heptasuchus was named by Dawley et al. (1979). Its type is Heptasuchus clarki.
It was assigned to Rauisuchidae by Dawley et al. (1979), Carroll (1988) and Parrish (1993); and to Poposauridae by Long and Murry (1995).
