Taxonomy
Hoplitosaurus was named by Lucas (1902). It was considered monophyletic by Vickaryous et al. (2004).
It was synonymized subjectively with Polacanthus by Pereda-Suberbiola (1993), Pereda-Suberbiola (1994) and Knoll et al. (1998).
It was assigned to Stegosauridae by von Zittel (1911); to Acanthopholidae by Nopcsa (1923) and Huene (1927); to Ankylosaurinae by Nopcsa (1929); to Scelidosauridae by Lucas (1902), Gilmore (1914) and Hay (1930); to Ankylosauridae by Huene (1909), Nopcsa (1928) and Maleev (1956); to Ankylosauria by Vickaryous et al.
