Neoaetosauroides was named by Bonaparte (1969). Its type is Neoaetosauroides engaeus.
It was assigned to Stagnolepididae by Carroll (1988); to Stagonolepididae by Heckert and Lucas (1999); to Aetosauria by Desojo and Baez (2007); to Aetosaurinae by Parker (2007); and to Desmatosuchinae by Heckert and Lucas (2000) and Parker (2016).
