Taxonomy
Stegomus was named by Marsh (1896). Its type is Stegomus arcuatus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Aetosaurus by Lucas et al. (1998), Heckert and Lucas (1999) and Heckert and Lucas (2000).
It was assigned to Belodontia by Marsh (1896); to Episcoposaurinae by Huene (1942); to Aetosauridae by Hay (1902), Lull (1915), Watson (1917), Lull (1917), Hay (1930) and Charig (1967); to Stagnolepididae by Carroll (1988); and to Stagonolepidae by Huene (1922), Jepsen (1948) and Desojo et al. (2013).
