F. M. Anderson 1958 | Shell is large, massive, somewhat trapezoidal in outline, as viewed from the side, though from the front or rear its inflated sides give it a rotund, almost spherical appearance. Umbones are broad and rounded, though truncated behind; apex of beak being nearly central, though relatively low, beak depressed above the ligamental area ; base of valves broadly rounded curving rapidly upward at anterior end, but meeting its border at nearly right angles ; surface of shell generally smooth, showing only fine concentric lines of growth ; at nearly uniform intervals interspersed with coarser threads or grooves, producing a wave-like surface unlike that of any other known species. Hinge is long and straight at top, but broadly arched beneath, set with normal cucullaeaid teeth, consisting of a short interval of vertical denticles near the middle, 8-10 in number, and long laterals at the ends, 3 or 4 in number, nearly parallel with hinge margin, or slightly inclined to front or rear. Holotype (C. A. S. Type Coll.) has the following dimensions: length, 102 mm; height, 90 mm; thickness of each valve, 48 mm ; giving the umbonal diameter of the shell a measure greater than its height. |
