Dyoplax was named by Fraas (1867). Its type is Dyoplax arenaceus.
It was assigned to Proterosuchidae by Huene (1922); to Aetosauridae by Watson (1917) and Huene (1942); to Thecodontia by Kuhn (1971); to Erpetosuchidae by Nopcsa (1928), Kuhn (1966) and Carroll (1988); to Sphenosuchia by Lucas et al. (1998); to Pseudosuchia by Nesbitt and Butler (2012); and to Archosauriformes by Irmis et al. (2013).
