Doswellia was named by Weems (1980). Its type is Doswellia kaltenbachi.
It was assigned to Thecodontia by Carroll (1988); to Doswelliidae by Weems (1980), Long and Murry (1995), Dilkes and Sues (2009) and Heckert et al. (2012); and to Doswelliidae by Baciu and Chanet (2002), Desojo et al. (2011), Sues et al. (2013) and Ezcurra (2016).
