Heleosaurus was named by Broom (1907). It is not extant. Its type is Heleosaurus scholtzi. It is the type genus of Heleosauridae.
It was assigned to Mesosauria by Broom (1907); to Heleosauridae by Kuhn (1966) and Benton (1985); to Thecodontia by Carroll (1988); to Varanopidae by Reisz and Modesto (2007); and to Afrothyra by Spindler et al. (2018).
