Piesmides was named by Amyot and Audinet-Serville (1843). It is extant. Its type is Piesma.

It was corrected as Piesmatidae by Nel et al. (2004), Cassis and Schuh (2010) and Szwedo (2018).

It was assigned to Heteroptera by Nel et al. (2004); to Lygaeoidea by Cassis and Schuh (2010); and to Piesmatoidea by Szwedo (2018).
