Saltoposuchus was named by von Huene (1921). Its type is Saltoposuchus connectens.
It was assigned to Pedeticosauridae by Charig (1967) and Walker (1970); to Ornithosuchidae by Huene (1922), Huene (1942) and Kuhn (1971); to Saltoposuchidae by Carroll (1988); and to Crocodylomorpha by Irmis et al. (2013).
