Taxonomy
Sphenosuchidae was named by Huene (1922). Its type is Sphenosuchus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Erpetosuchidae by Kuhn (1946); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Crocodilomorphi by Clark et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Archosauria by Haughton (1924); to Procrocodilia by Nopcsa (1928); to Pseudosuchia by Huene (1922), Huene (1942), Haughton and Brink (1954) and Romer (1956); to Ornithosuchoidea by Kuhn (1964); to Sphenosuchoidea by Kuhn (1966); to Sphenosuchia by Carroll (1988); to Crocodilomorphi by Sues et al. (2003); and to Crocodylomorpha by Gohlich et al. (2005).
