Polysiphon was named by Girty (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u]. Its type is Polysiphon mirabilis. It is the type genus of Polysiphonidae.

It was assigned to Polysiphonidae by Girty (1909); and to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002).
