Haliplides was named by Aubé (1836). It is extant.

It was corrected as Haliplidae by Crowson (1981), Lawrence and Newton (1995) and Bouchard et al. (2011); it was reranked as the subfamily Haliplidae by LeConte (1861) and Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Dytiscides by LeConte (1861); to Caraboidea by Crowson (1981); and to Adephaga by Lawrence and Newton (1995), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Cai et al. (2022).
