Y. Tanaka and M. Watanabe 2019 | Among Balaenopteridae, Miobalaenoptera numataensis uniquely has a dorsoventrally thin pars coch- learis, especially the medial (dorsal) edge, and a sharp anteroposteriorly long ridge on the ventral side of the anterior process. Miobalaenoptera numataensis differs from other balaenopterids except ‘Balaenoptera’ ryani by having incipient lateral tuberosities of the periotic. Miobalaenoptera numataensis differs from other balae- nopterids except ‘Megaptera’ miocanea, Protororquals cuvieri and Megaptera novaeangliae by having a slen- der zygomatic process and a strongly excavated lateral margin of the orbit in dorsoventral view. Miobalaenoptera numataensis differs from other balae- nopterids except Fragilicetus velponi by having strongly diverged basioccipital crests. Miobalaenoptera numataensis differs from the other extinct balaenopter- ids except ‘Megaptera’ hubachi by having a broadly or more or less horizontally expanded subtemporal crest. Miobalaenoptera numataensis can be identified from the extant taxa þ ‘Megaptera’ miocaena by having a deep suprameatal fossa of the periotic. Miobalaenoptera numataensis differs from the extinct taxa except Fragilicetus velponi by having a long cau- dal tympanic process of the periotic. |
